Neon Draft Racers: How Drafting Actually Works

July 14, 2026 · Lena Hartmann

If you're just flooring it in Neon Draft Racers, you're leaving speed on the table. The whole game is built around drafting, and once I understood it my lap times dropped dramatically.

Drafting means tucking in close behind another car to cut through the air they've already pushed aside. The game shows a little meter when you're in the sweet spot, and holding there builds up a boost. The trick is not pulling out too early.

The slingshot is where the fun lives. When your draft meter is full, swing out and your car lunges past the one ahead. Timing that for a straight rather than a corner makes all the difference, and chaining it between multiple cars is pure joy.

It's a simple system but it has depth, and matches turn into little puzzles about which car to draft and when to spend the boost. That's what keeps me coming back to a game I'd otherwise call shallow.
